Frequently asked questions.
What is health and wellness coaching?
It’s a collaborative partnership between you and a trained professional who helps you identify you health goals, create sustainable lifestyle changes, and develop strategies to overcome obstacles. Unlike medical treatment, coaching focuses on empowering you to make informed decisions about your health through education, motivation, and accountability. Health coaches work holistically (whole person), addressing nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep, and other lifestyle factors that impact overall wellbeing.
What does it mean to be board-certified?
Board certification means I have completed rigorous training through an accredited program and passed a comprehensive examination administered by a recognized certifying body. This certification demonstrates my commitment to maintaining the highest professional standards and staying current with evidence-based coaching practices. Board-certified health coaches are required to complete continuing education to maintain their credentials, ensuring you receive the most up-to-date and effective coaching support.
What can I expect during our coaching sessions?
Each coaching session is tailored to your unique needs and goals. Sessions typically last 45-60 minutes and may be conducted via phone, video call, or in-person depending on your preference and location. We’ll start by exploring your current health status, challenges, and aspirations. Together, we’ll develop realistic, actionable goals and create step-by-step plans to achieve them. Sessions include ongoing support, accountability check-ins, and adjustments to your plan as needed. You’ll also receive resources, tools, and homework assignments to support your progress between sessions.
What types of health goals can you help me achieve?
I can support you with a wide range of wellness goals, including weight management, improving energy levels, developing better sleep habits, managing stress, creating sustainable nutrition practices, increasing physical activity and movement, building healthy routines, improving work-life balance, developing a positive relationship with food and body image, and work in collaboration with your healthcare team to manage chronic conditions. We’ll focus on creating lasting lifestyle changes rather than quick fixes.
How much does health coaching cost?
Coaching packages vary based on the length of engagement and level of support included. We’ll start with a free discovery call (more on that later). Individual rates are $90 per session, while comprehensive program packages offer better value for longer-term commitments. Package options include multiple sessions over a longer period, email and text support, resources and additional tools. During your initial consultation, we’ll discuss which option best fits your needs and budget. Some employers and insurance plans offer wellness benefits that may cover coaching services. Sometimes, enrolling in a health coaching program makes you eligible for reduced insurance premiums or other financial incentives through your employer.
Do you accept insurance?
While health coaching services are generally not yet covered by traditional health insurance, there are exceptions. Some employers offer wellness benefits, Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) that can be used for coaching services. Additionally, some insurance plans are beginning to recognize the value of preventive wellness services. I can provide documentation for reimbursement purposes, and we’ll explore all available options during your consultation.
How long does health coaching typically take to see results?
The timeline for seeing results varies greatly depending on your goals, starting point, and commitment level. Many clients begin to notice positive changes in energy, mood, and motivation within the first few weeks. More significant changes like weight loss, improved fitness, or established healthy habits typically take 3-6 months to solidify. Most coaching relationships last 3-6 months, though some clients choose longer-term support for ongoing accountability and continued growth.
Can health coaching be done virtually?
Absolutely! Virtual coaching via phone or video calls is highly effective and offers greater convenience and accessibility. Many clients actually prefer virtual sessions as they can participate from the comfort of their own home or office without travel time. Virtual coaching allows for flexible scheduling and eliminates geographical limitations. I use a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform to ensure your privacy and confidentiality are protected.
What if I’ve tried to change my habits before and failed?
Previous unsuccessful attempts don’t predict future outcomes, especially with professional support. Health coaching specifically addresses the common reasons why people struggle to maintain changes, such as unrealistic expectations, lack of planning, insufficient support, or trying to change too much at once. We’ll work together to identify what didn’t work before and develop new strategies tailored to your unique situation, preferences, values, and lifestyle. The coaching process includes building resilience and learning how to navigate setbacks constructively.
How is health coaching different from working with a nutritionist, personal trainer, or therapist?
Health coaches take a holistic approach that addresses all aspects of wellness, while other professionals typically focus on specific areas. Unlike nutritionists who primarily focus on diet or personal trainers who concentrate on exercise, health coaches help you integrate all lifestyle factors that affect your health. We don’t provide meal plans or workout routines, but rather help you develop the skills and mindset to make sustainable choices and create healthy habits across all areas of your life. Health coaching is not therapy and doesn’t treat mental health conditions, though we may work on stress management and developing health coping strategies. If we find during the course of our work together, that other professionals are needed to address your specific needs, I will assist you in finding the resource to work with you on meeting them.
How do I know if health coaching is right for me?
Health coaching is ideal if you’re motivated to make positive changes but need guidance, support, and accountability to achieve your goals. You’re a good candidate if you’re ready to take an active role in your health, open to trying new approaches, and committed to the coaching process. Coaching works best when you have realistic expectations and understand that lasting change takes time and effort. If you’re dealing with serious mental health issues or acute medical conditions, it’s important to address these with appropriate healthcare professionals first.
What is your coaching philosophy and approach?
At Vital Shift Health & Wellness, I believe that you are the expert on your own life and my role is to guide and support you in discovering what works best for you. My approach is client-centered, evidence-based, and focused on creating sustainable changes that fit into your real life. I emphasize progress over perfection, celebrate small wins, and help you build confidence in your ability to make health choices. Do I need a referral from my doctor to work with a health coach?
No referral is necessary to work with me. However, if you have chronic health conditions or are taking medications, we encourage you to inform your healthcare provider about your coaching journey. Health coaches work as part of your wellness team and can complement medical care by helping you implement lifestyle changes recommended by your doctor. I never provide medical advice, nor do I recommend any supplements or changes to your prescribed medications or treatment plan.
